Recommended reading For fiction in general “Characters and Viewpoint” by Orson Scott Card “Creating Unforgettable Characters” by Linda Seder “How to Write a Damn Good Novel” by James N. For instance, when I found the description of a device in a computer to be in error, I pointed it out to the author, suggested an alternative that would be more plausible to computer sophisticated readers, and qualified my comments by telling her of my years of computer experience. Give your relevant experiences (optional). Before you criticize something that you may not like personally, ask yourself: who are the readers this author wants to write for. Then you may enjoy reading my books at crayne. By the way, she thanked me. Is this appropriate for that audience. Do you as a critic have a good idea of the type of readers this author was writing for. Did the author go overboard on flashbacks. In short stories, one subplot may be okay, but two or more is often just too much.

  53. Here, in this same city, the blood of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims mingled in the bloodbath of Jallianwala Bagh. Make way for the refugees with your own force of volunteers and let them deliver the refugees safely at our frontier. Let us take the initiative in breaking this vicious circle of attacks and counter-attacks. I am grieved to think that things have come to such a pass that no Muslim can go about in Amritsar and no Hindu or Sikh can even think of living in Lahore. This sort of truce is permitted even by laws of war. Any obstacles or hindrances will only worsen the plight of our refugees who are already performing prodigious feats of endurance. To fight against the refugees is no fight at all. I have come to you with a specific appeal. No laws of humanity or war among honourable men permit the murder of people who have sought shelter and protection. The butchery of innocent and defenceless men, women and children does not behove brave men . Such a fight must await an appropriate time and conditions and you must be watchful in choosing your ground. Let there be truce for three months in which both sides can exchange their refugees. If we have to fight, we must fight clean. Pledge the safety of Muslim refugees crossing the city. Hold your hands for a week and see what happens. I am quite certain that India’s interest lies in getting all her men and women across the border and sending out all Muslims from East Punjab.

[]  While I would contend that broadcasters like myself tried valiantly to represent both sides of the dispute, we did have to work within what had become an all powerful narrative: the country could not afford to continue subsidising uneconomic coal mines, devastating though that might be for their communities; the strike itself was a denial of democracy because there had been no pit head ballot and the violence on the miners’ picket lines, by challenging  the rule of law, constituted a threat to  the democratic government of the country. I have to admit that in the end I got ensnared by the seeming inevitability of the Thatcherite story that the mine workers had to be defeated in order to smash trade union militancy.
